We spend a third of our lives in bed, and some even more. Many people in bed have breakfast or dinner, drink wine, apply makeup, and play with children or pets. Therefore, a stain on a mattress is a frequent occurrence, sometimes neither a sheet nor a mattress cover can save it from it. Here are some tips to clean stained mattresses.
Quick cleaning methods at home
The mattress can be cleaned with products that are in any home, sold in stores or pharmacies. How to quickly eliminate pollution with improvised means?
1. From dust and dirt, bedding is cleaned with vinegar and water or baking soda. It also helps eliminate mites and odours.
2. Urine helps liquid soap and detergent for dishes. Pharmaceutical borax powder is also suitable. You can also wash the soiled area with a semi-dry sponge with a solution of laundry soap and 2-4 drops of alcohol, and vinegar. A gruel of lemon juice and table salt rubbed into the problem area, will remove the stain and smell. The best remedy is a solution of 2 cups of warm water, ½ cup of ammonia and ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide. Lemon juice will help to discolour the stain.
3. From blood especially fresh 3% hydrogen peroxide helps well. Necessary: after this, the blood-stained area may become slightly lighter. You can use highly carbonated water (wetting the stain and sprinkling salt on top). Effective borax 1 tsp per 200 ml of water is a good remedy for old stains, as well as a mixture of starch, hydrogen peroxide and salt in equal doses.
4. Having stained the bedding with lipstick and other cosmetics, you need to use alcohol or a solution of 1 tsp. ammonia in 0.5 litres of water.
5. Fat can be easily removed by wiping the mattress with a cotton pad moistened with alcohol and drying.
6. Drops of wax/paraffin are cleaned with a knife, then the dripped place must be ironed through a sheet of paper.
7. Fresh traces of spilled tea or coffee can be easily removed with a mixture of salt and glycerin.
8. There will be no traces of wine left if they are quickly covered with salt, wait half an hour and vacuum.
A white mattress pad will become a serious problem if you do not know how to clean a mattress at home. Use a chlorine-based bleach – rub the product with a clean white cloth soaked in chlorine, rinse the mattress and dry it. Treat with a mixture, wipe with a soft brush, rinse, and dry.
Can the mattress be washed?
Sometimes the pollution is too strong, and the bedding needs to be washed. Wrong washing can permanently ruin your bedding. How to wash a mattress “painlessly”? Depends on its filler:
1. Coconut fiber.
The material does not like liquids – it can only be vacuumed and ventilated. In the wash on a delicate mode, you can send the cover.
2. Cotton wool.
The product is not afraid of moisture, but dries for a very long time. Therefore, water is not the best option, use special products.
3. Latex.
Not afraid of water – can be washed in the bath.
4. PPU.
Washing is undesirable – only moisten, pat dry with a dry cloth, then dry.
5. Spring models.
Only dry cleaning is allowed.
If you need to do laundry, place your synthetic-filled mattress on a wooden or plastic rack resting on the edge of the tub. Rub the cleanser into the soiled areas, leave for 2-3 hours, and rinse with a warm shower. Let it drain, and dry well on the balcony, in the yard or near a hot battery.
In particularly difficult cases, deep cleaning of the filler is required. How to clean the inside of a mattress – simply unstitch it, remove the contents and wash separately. You can replace part of the stuffing if it is not a solid piece, or take it to a company that specializes in such restoration services.
To ensure the quality and integrity of the product, dry cleaning is the best way out – choose a trusted company, or read reviews about dry cleaners in your city on the Internet. But not all such companies undertake to clean the mattress.
If the mattress exudes an unpleasant odour, use folk remedies like a 3 to 1 water-salt solution, soda, vinegar with soda, and ammonia. Apply any of them to the surface of the product with a spray bottle or a napkin, wait from 3 hours to a day, and vacuum.
Do not eat in bed, do not smoke, and do not do cosmetic procedures. Vacuum the mattress and change the sheets at least once every 2 weeks – this way you will see fresh stains more quickly.
